here's how karma works:
i work every third weekend.
each new year, i sit down with a calendar and mark all the weekends i'm scheduled.
this year i felt smug, as i'm not scheduled to work any holiday weekends.
today i realized that i work on three weekends that i hold more important than holidays: the golden globes, the superbowl, and the oscars.
i had earlier discovered that i also work the weekends of two bike events i don't want to miss.
serves me right for feeling smug.

a poem from a dear friend and teacher, perhaps something to read when contemplating resolutions and the like. happy new year.
Enlightenment
Forget about enlightenment.
Sit down wherever you are
and listen to the wind singing
in your veins.
Feel the love, the longing and
the fear in your bones.
Open your heart to who you
are right now, not who you'd
like to be. Not the saint you're
striving to become, but the
being right there before you,
inside you, around you.
All of you is holy.
You're already more and less
than whatever you can know.
Breath out, look in, let go.

thanks, deirdre!
